Bergman's study of human emotion and inner conflicts is at it's most genius in this simple scene that says it all about human interaction: we constantly project -- the positive, negative, ourselfes onto others and vice versa. We are forever bound by frightening realization that everything is subjective, and the only way to relate is to accept perpetual solitude. We can hope to get closer whilst remaining sane and essentially -- one-self.
