a crush is a fluttery butterflies in your stomach when that someone is in the room.
a crush could also be a force of distruction.
i spent this afternoon in dimply lit rooms on 3rd floor of PS1, watching lage scale lo-fi videos/films of Cyprien Gaillard.
he is my latest art crush and his work is about much of surrounding in a state of a crush (or crash), or dismantling and ruins. he began very young, his motivation to become an artist, unlike so much of what I hear around NYC, had little to do with being a "persona"but rather a lot to do with integrating himself further in the things/ activities that he gravitated to naturally, since his teen years.
travelling, the wondering through spaces, has always been my favorite past time, however I arrived to my work through it, much later, but via a similar train of thought.
lately I have been thinking about the violence, and its integral part in the process of being. something has to break to be born into the world: i.e. the australian gum trees have to get burnt in the bush fires for the nut to crack -- for the trees to re-new themselves: birth by fire.
a conversation between Cyprien and one of the most prominent art heads Hans Ulrich Obrist can be found here:

he is also responsible for one of the most eery and enthralling music video ( a personal soft spot for recognizing mindless violent "draki" -- organized beatings between various local gangs, in Russia and Eastern Europe, here soccer fans) matched with a perfect track by Koudlam, from back in 2007, when the world definitely felt in a simultaneous state of decomposition.
what I love about Cyprien's work is that it is both studied and subtle, and that it's personal.
