golden props

...

australian adventures pt.2.

as i meandered through cute little stores of Fitzroy area of Melbourne, I watched myself with ambivalence noting the deeply embedded attachment to all things material and the joy found in having a new wardrobe. having worked in fashion as a designer for years left me feeling both jaded from the industry tiresome overproduction, bad business ideas and egomaniacal tendency it inspired. yet my initial interest in fashion and the belief behind it remains: the style and clothing are inseparable from how I feel. taking care of oneself, or an element of it -- is dressing well, and suited to one's body and mindset..

beyond fashion, in the past weeks, property ownership topic had somehow risen to dominate the agenda. family and friends debated over pros and cons of buying owning and renting, the implied mortgage dependency, the privilege of having enough to purchase sans debt and the reality of not having enough to own and whether in itself that implies one has not succeeded or did not make "smart choices".

i love the idea of owning the house, but i hate the idea of working toward the idea. altogether i belive it is irrelevant to the quality of life. yet -- simultaneously i do think that owning a home is incredibly stabilizing... with that dichotomy in mind after a day of window and a little of actual shopping, i went to the opening at one of the strongholds of Melbourne's art scene -- Gertrude Gallery.

there, i found the following exhibition by Geoff Kleem, which summed up my inner conflict de jour.

we all need help to be in this world, the manifestation of said support varies from me to you..
